Du livre au film: L’Extraordinaire Voyage du Fakir – Book to movie: The Extraordinary Journey of the Fakir

Monsieur et moi n’allons pas souvent au ciné. En tout cas pas ensemble, faute de babysitter (#vismaviedeparent). Cette fois-ci, on a eu l’occasion de faire garder Mademoiselle par une voisine sympa, le temps d’un film feel good.

Mr and I don’t often go to the movie. At least not together, because we don’t really want to pay for a babysitter to go to the movie (#loveparenting). This time, a nice neighbour looked after Mademoiselle for a few hours. Enough time to watch a feel good movie together.

C’est moi qui ai choisi – parce que si on écoute Monsieur, on se retrouve avec des super héros en veux-tu en voilà. Je n’ai rien contre les super-héros, mais je suis un chouia en retard dans l’aventure Marvel. Je me suis arrêtée à Dr Strange. Ca vous donne une idée des intervalles auxquels on va au ciné ensemble, Monsieur et moi 😉

I picked the movie. If I let Mr chose, we’re systematically watching super hero movies. I like super heroes, but I’ve missed quite a few of the Marvel franchise. The last one I saw was Dr Strange. This gives you an idea of how often we go to the movie together 😉

Mais je digresse. J’ai donc choisi d’aller voir L’extraordinaire Voyage Du Fakir, adapté du best seller L’extraordinaire Voyage Du Fakir Qui Etait Resté Coincé Dans Une Armoire Ikéa. Livre que j’avais apprécié, m’étant bidonnée comme il se doit, mais dont j’avais tout de même relevé la facilité de cliché avec laquelle il traitait certaines populations. Mon avis complet est ici.

But I disgress. I pick The extraordinary Journey Of The Fakir, a film based on the book The Extraordinary journey Of The Fakir Who Got Stuck in an Ikea Wardrobe. (yeah it’s a fairly long title). I loved the book, laughed a lot and all. But I did notice a few borderline racist jokes (ahem lots of them). You can read my review of the book here.

C’est donc avec un peu d’appréhension que j’ai emmené Monsieur voir ce film, sachant que l’humour français… est très français. Monsieur est indien. J’avais donc un peu peur de certaines touches d’humour un peu extrêmes du livre.

And so I was fairly enthusiastic, if not a bit anxious, to take Mr to the movie. You need to understand that French humour can be… very French. Dark. Dirty. Bordeline. So I was a bit scared about how this would be rendered in the movie.

Et alors là, super bonne surprise! Tous les défauts borderline racistes du livre sont complètement gommés. Exit les jeux de mot tous pourris sur le nom du héro.

And so, I was very pleasently surprised by how all of this had been dealt with in the movie. All the borderline jokes, like those on the name of the hero, had been taken down.

L’histoire, très sympa et traitant d’un sujet assez sensible (l’immigration clandestine), est enjolivée un chouia. Mais on ne perd absolument pas l’essence du récit originel.

The storyline was kept, and bettered a bit. It deals with a heavy topic, illegal immigration, on a very light and humoristic tone. Just like the book.

Les histoires d’amour sont renforcées, alors qu’elles n’étaient pas vraiment au centre de l’histoire dans le livre. Celle d’Aja et Marie, Ok. C’est la belle Marie qui motive Aja à rester en vie, et c’est son moteur pour retourner à Paris.

In the movie, the love stories are enhanced and developped, whereas in the book there is only ONE, and it is Aja and Marie’s.

Mais l’histoire de Marie en elle-même, serial-abandonneuse de fiancés à l’église, est complètement rajoutée; tout comme celle de la mère d’Aja ou de Bérénice Béjo. Mais ça donne un peu de romantisme au film, donc on l’excuse.

Even Marie’s story is developped, with her tendancy to leave fiancés at the altar. Aja’s mom also gets her own love story, and the French actress played by Berenice Béjo also has an interesting love life. It brings a romantic dimension to the movie, so it’s fine.

Seule ombre au tableau: les scènes avec les gypsies ont été complètement coupées. Gérard Jugnot apparaît quelques minutes en chauffeur de taxi gypsie et roublard, mais c’est tout. Quel gâchis!!! C’était très drôle dans le livre, et Jugnot est juste un acteur génial. C’est peut-être que son accent français était trop prononcé? En tout cas j’ai été déçue qu’il n’ait pas plus de temps d’écran.

The only thing that I regret is that all the gypsy drama was cut off. Gérard Jugnot, who is an excellent French actor, is on screen for a few minutes only, and his plot it completely cut off. It was very funny in the book and I was actually looking forward to it. Is it because Jugnot’s French accent is a bit too heavy? I was a bit diappointed.

Danush, l’acteur indien, fait du bon boulot. Mais niveau Bollywood, c’est moyen. Je veux dire, ils nous ont fait une super scène dansée dans un club, et la choré était juste moyenne. J’ai pratiquement trouvé que Bérénice Béjo faisait un meilleur boulot que Danush niveau danse. Mais je suppose que quand on est étranger au Bollywood, ça passe comme une lettre à la poste.

Danush, the Indian actor, is doign a great job. As an actor. As a Bollywood dancer, he’s so so. Knowing Bollywood choreographies, I was expecting a bit more from him. I almost found that Bérénice Béjo, the French actress dancing with him, was doing a better job. But it was a fun scene, and if you don’t know Bollywood, it’s fine.

L’épisode chanté avec le garde frontière anglais était juste hilarante et nous a laissés sur le cul. On se demandait d’où ça sortait, mais en fait c’était vraiment chouette 🙂

The part when the frontier guard start singing about deporting the illegal immigrats was a bit WTF, we didn’t really understand where it was coming from, but it was hilarious.

De manière générale, c’est un bon film, bourré de bons sentiments, avec de jolis effets visuels, romantique, feel good, et marrant. Un film parfait pour ce début d’été!

All in all, it’s a good movie, with lots of nice feelings, beautiful visual effects, and funny. Perfect for summer!
